Officials with the Anne Arundel County Public School System have confirmed cases of the novel coronavirus among student-athletes at Annapolis High and Southern High in Harwood.

According to a statement released yesterday, Annapolis High Principal Patrick Gelinas said two students tested positive for covid-19 after participating in team practices hosted by the school's football program. "We have been made aware that one varsity student-athlete and one junior varsity student-athlete in our football program have tested positive for Covid-19," Gelinas wrote.  "The student-athletes were participants in the team’s March 1, 2021, practice and subsequently tested positive."

One student-athlete in the varsity football program at Southern High School has tested positive for COVID-19, confirmed by a letter written by Principal Angela Hopkins.

Anyone who has been in close contact with the student-athletes from both schools who tested positive were notified and are required to quarantine for a period of 14 days. The remainder of the varsity teams, as well as the entire junior varsity teams, may continue to practice.

"It is important to understand that we are in the midst of a pandemic," says both letters.  "All of our programs take the necessary precautions in order to operate and no one is at fault for the spread of this virus."
