Senator Shaneka Henson, Baltimore Ravens Legend Torrey Smith Join Seafarers Yacht Club to Celebrate 20 Years of Transformative Youth Summer Program in Annapolis
The Seafarers Foundation and the Seafarers Yacht Club of Annapolis has proudly celebrated the 20th anniversary of their transformative Youth Summer Program, a significant milestone in youth empowerment. Maryland State Senator Shaneka Henson, alongside community leaders, program alumni, and supporters, including Baltimore Ravens legend Torrey Smith, commemorated two decades of dedicated sailing, mentorship, and leadership development on the Chesapeake Bay.
The Seafarers Youth Summer Program has introduced hundreds of Annapolis-area youth to boating and maritime safety, while instilling vital life skills such as confidence, teamwork, responsibility, and self-discipline. What began as a small initiative with a grand vision has blossomed into a cherished community institution, leaving an indelible mark on generations of local families. Senator Henson, a steadfast advocate for youth enrichment and community-based initiatives, shared in a statement following the event, "For two decades—joined by supporters like Ravens great Torrey Smith—this program has helped young people build confidence, leadership, and life skills on the water. Thank you to the Foundation members, donors, and community for making it possible, and congratulations to the alumni who show the true impact of this work. Here’s to the next 20 years!"
The celebration was held at Martin's Crosswinds, featured inspiring speeches, and many attendees reflected on the program's role as a beacon for Annapolis youth, particularly those from underserved communities, providing them with opportunities they might not otherwise encounter.
Torrey Smith, a Super Bowl champion and advocate for youth development in Maryland, commended the program’s mission and the tangible outcomes it has consistently delivered. Senator Henson's presence underscored continued legislative support for programs that prioritize equity, opportunity, and outdoor education.
The Seafarers Foundation has regularly extended its gratitude to the numerous donors, volunteers, and community stakeholders whose contributions have sustained the program for two decades, while always emphasizing the critical need for continued support to expand access and capacity in the years ahead. As the ceremony concluded, a commemorative plaque was unveiled to honor the program’s founders and early leaders, signifying a bright and buoyant future for Annapolis community and youth development.
