Highway Sign on Rowe Boulevard in Annapolis Dedicated to Honor the Memory of 2018 Capital Gazette Mass Shooting Victims
A highway sign on Rowe Boulevard in Annapolis, honoring the "Capital Gazette Five" was unveiled today. This sign commemorates the five employees who tragically lost their lives in the mass shooting at the newspaper's office in 2018.
The dedication ceremony took place with community leaders and the victims' families in attendance. The sign marks a one-mile section of Rowe Boulevard, a major route into Annapolis and toward the State House, and specifically honors Gerald Fischman, Rob Hiaasen, John McNamara, Rebecca Smith, and Wendi Winters. Speakers at the ceremony emphasized the sign as a lasting tribute and a reminder of the First Amendment and the importance of a free press.
This is the second memorial dedicated to the victims. An earlier memorial, "Guardians of the First Amendment," was dedicated in 2021 at Newman Street Park.
