City of Annapolis Announces New Marine Tech Apprenticeship Program

The City of Annapolis today announced a new Marine Tech Apprenticeship Program, a city-funded initiative introduced by Alderman Brooks Schandelmeier (Ward 5) and developed in partnership with the Marine Trades Association of Maryland (MTAM).

The program is designed to train residents for high-demand careers in the recreational boating industry, a key part of Annapolis’ economy. Apprentices will receive hands-on training in engine repair, electrical systems, and marina operations, while earning a wage and working toward industry-recognized certification.

“Annapolis has always been a leader in Maryland’s boating community,” said Schandelmeier. “This program ensures we continue to grow our maritime workforce and support good local jobs.”

The boating industry in Maryland supports over 1,088 businesses and contributes $4.5 billion annually to the state’s economy, city officials stated.

Program highlights include:

Structured training: a year-long curriculum combining practical work and technical classroom instruction.

Experienced mentorship: Apprentices will train under seasoned marine technicians.

Industry-recognized certification: Graduates will earn credentials to support long-term careers.

Earn while you learn: Apprentices will receive a competitive wage during training, with full-time employment opportunities upon completion.

The first apprentices will be hired by Port Annapolis Marina and Diversified Marine Service, both based in Annapolis. Applications are currently being accepted. For details and to receive an application, contact Emily Decker at edecker@mtam.org
