Pasadena Brothers Sentenced to Prison for Used Car Odometer Fraud

Two Anne Arundel County brothers have been sentenced to federal prison for running a used car scam that involved rolling back odometers and falsifying vehicle titles, costing buyers thousands of dollars, according to the US Attorney's Office

Kamal Khalid, 44, of Pasadena, was sentenced to three years in prison and three years of supervised release for conspiracy and securities fraud. His brother, Fnu Shahrukh, 31, of Severna Park, was sentenced earlier to 18 months.

According to officials, both were ordered to pay $1.2 million in restitution to victims.Between 2016 and 2019, the brothers bought high-mileage cars at auctions, altered the odometers to show significantly lower mileage—on average by 124,000 miles—and updated the titles with the false readings. They then sold the vehicles at inflated prices through auctions and direct sales. The scheme misled buyers into believing the vehicles were in better condition than they actually were, leading to overpayment and potential safety risks due to worn components that were overdue for maintenance.

Both men pleaded guilty earlier this year. Authorities urge used car buyers to research vehicle histories and look for signs of tampering before making a purchase.
