Lockdown Lifted, Investigation Underway, Midshipman in Stable Condition Following Reports of Officer Involved Shots Fired Incident at Naval Academy
The lockdown on the campus of the United States Naval Academy was lifted shortly after midnight, following reports of an officer-involved shooting that left at least one midshipman injured. While details are still emerging and remain unconfirmed by the academy, a source has indicated that at least one midshipman was shot and transported to an area hospital. Additionally, at least one Department of Defense officer reportedly sustained a non-gunshot injury during the incident.
According to a statement provided by Lieutenant Naweed Lemar to Report Annapolis News yesterday, Naval Support Activity Annapolis, in coordination with local law enforcement, responded to reports of threats made to the Naval Academy at approximately 5:07 PM. The campus was placed on lockdown "out of an abundance of caution." Lieutenant Lemar stated that there was "no active shooter threat, however one person was injured while Naval Security Forces were clearing a building. One person has been medevaced with injuries."
A source speaking under conditions of anonymity shared the following details with Report Annapolis News yesterday:
The campus lockdown was reportedly initiated due to a nationwide hoax involving threats to college campuses, including the Naval Academy. The initial threat claimed a former midshipman planned to shoot up the school, which was later distorted to suggest the individual was disguised as a police officer. Law enforcement intervened and cleared Bancroft Hall. During this operation, a midshipman reportedly mistook officers entering his room for the shooter and struck an officer in the head. The officer is then said to have responded by shooting the midshipman in the arm. The injured midshipman was transported by helicopter to an area hospital and was reported to be in stable condition.
Lieutenant Naweed, spokesperson for the Naval Academy, confirmed that the lockdown concluded after more than seven hours, and acknowledged that an investigation is underway. However, Lieutenant Naweed declined to provide further details or confirm or deny that a midshipman was shot or an officer was injured.
Update from USNA as of 3:07pm, 9/12:
On Thursday, September 11 at approximately 5:07 PM EST, Naval Support Activity Annapolis security and local law enforcement responded to reports of a security concern at the United States Naval Academy. During the response, two individuals were injured. A midshipman sustained injuries from a gunshot wound to the shoulder and was transported to a local hospital where he was treated and released today. The other person, a member of the naval security force, received minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital before being released.
We want to clarify that there was no active shooter at the Naval Academy. While Naval Support Activity has resumed normal operations, general public visitation to the Academy remains closed for today. A full investigation into the incident is underway with NCIS and law enforcement. We are grateful for the continued support and collaboration of our local law enforcement partners.
