Glen Burnie Woman Receives 10-Year Sentence for Fentanyl-Related Death of Her Two-Year Old Daughter
This afternoon, in Anne Arundel County Circuit Court, Tiffany Lynee Carr, 35, of Glen Burnie, entered a guilty plea to 1st Degree Child Abuse in connection with the death of her two-year-old daughter, Nevaeh.
A Judge sentenced Carr to 25 years, with all but 10 years of active incarceration suspended in the Division of Corrections. Upon release, Carr will also be subject to five years of supervised probation and ordered to undergo any substance abuse and mental health evaluations or treatments deemed necessary by the Court.
Following the sentencing, State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess issued a statement regarding the tragedy, highlighting the defendant's irresponsible actions and neglect of her child’s safety. Leitess stated, "To say this is a tragedy is an understatement. Sadly, not a single person was in the courtroom today to speak on behalf of this child because there was no one else she could count on other than her mother. The actions of this Defendant were reckless, inexcusable, and showed total disregard for the safety of her toddler. This Defendant failed this child terribly and will have to live with the consequences.” She added, “We will continue to fight every day to protect our most vulnerable.”
This incident occurred on August 17, 2024, at approximately 7:15 PM, when officers from the Anne Arundel County Police Department responded to a report of an unresponsive two-year-old girl in the 8000 block of Winding Road in Glen Burnie. Officers discovered the child unresponsive on a futon, and EMS initiated medical protocols. A homemade smoking device was observed near the child. The child was transported to the hospital, where she was pronounced deceased at 8:19 PM. The child’s mother, Tiffany Carr, and her boyfriend were also transported to the hospital by police.
Investigators determined that the child ingested Fentanyl between noon and 7:15 PM on August 17, 2024, with the cause of death being narcotic (fentanyl) intoxication. The defendant admitted to investigators that she was addicted to heroin and crack cocaine, which she had consumed earlier that day. She explained that she had been sleeping intermittently since 2:00 PM while the child napped. Upon waking at 7:00 PM, she found the child unresponsive, called 911, performed CPR, and administered two shots of Narcan. Crime scene investigators recovered the smoking device and several fentanyl-positive drug capsules from the residence.
An online obituary published by Reese and Sons Funeral Home said the following about Nevaeh:
"Nevaeh brought immeasurable joy and light into her family’s lives with her kind heart, radiant smile, fighting spirit, and boundless curiosity. Nevaeh loved going to the pool, going to the Park and getting on the swings, and watching My Little Pony and Ms. Rachel on YouTube where she learned sign language and other educational information she picked up on easily."
