Severn Man Was Arrested For Assault, Violation of Protective Order Months Before Fatal Stabbing

Court records indicate a Severn man had been arrested at least once for assaulting his ex girlfriend and multiple times for violating a protective order issued to her months before she allegedly stabbed him to death.

On Sunday, July 5, 2020 at approximately 12:52 a.m., the Anne Arundel County Police responded to the 1700 block of Meade Village Circle Road, Severn, Maryland for the report of a fight in progress.  Upon arrival officers located an adult male suffering from trauma to the upper body.  Responding officers rendered aid until paramedics arrived on scene.  Larry Bennett Dorsey, 42, was transported to an area hospital where he later died.

During interviews, detectives learned Mr. Dorsey was intoxicated and told to leave the ex-girlfriend’s residence on several occasions but would then return a short time later.   Evidence from the scene indicated his ex-girlfriend armed herself with a knife and confronted Mr. Dorsey.  During the confrontation his ex-girlfriend, identified as thirty-three year old Shantel Dakeisha Brooks, stabbed Mr. Dorsey in the chest and also the left arm.

According to documents obtained by Report Annapolis, Anne Arundel County police officers arrested and charged Mr. Dorsey with a single second degree assault charge on June 11, 2018 after he reportedly choked Ms. Brooks during an argument.  Ms. Brooks was subsequently granted an order of protection related to that incident.

In the petition for protection filed at the Glen Burnie District Court, Brooks alleged Mr. Dorsey choked her until a neighbor intervened.  "The neighbor had to subdue him," she wrote.  Charges issued against Mr. Dorsey in this incident were later dropped by county prosecutors.

After midnight on February 9, 2019, police say Ms. Brooks called for help twice due to Mr. Dorsey "being intoxicated and causing a scene." Mr. Dorsey was taken into custody and charged with violating the protective order.  He was given a 90 day suspended sentence and 1 year of supervised probation after pleading guilty, according to court records.

Officers alleged in a criminal complaint dated March 19, 2019 that Mr. Dorsey had entered Ms. Brooks' residence through a window and eventually left after being asked multiple times to do so. Authorities were summoned back to the residence that same day after Mr. Dorsey "returned to the residence multiple times." He was arrested and charged again with violating the same protective order for matters related to that incident.  Those charges against Mr. Dorsey were later dropped.

Ms. Brooks is currently being held without bond at the Jennifer Road Detention Center after District Court Judge Sydney Butcher denied a request for her to be released pending trial. Judge Butcher also denied a subsequent request for a second bail review.   A preliminary hearing has been scheduled for August 5.
