Opinion: Bought and Paid For; Public Safety Left Behind- By Joe Pilat, President, Annapolis Professional Firefighters Union IAFF Local 1926
Ward One Alderman Harry Huntley recently claimed our endorsement of Ron Gunzburger was “bought and paid for.” That’s ironic coming from someone appointed to his seat by the same political machine whose endorsements he now flaunts—after touting his fundraising for the central committee as a big reason for his appointment.
Yet while Huntley brags about helping residents “feel the benefits of your taxes,” he’s fought against adding desperately needed fire department staffing—positions backed by hard data and national safety standards.
We’ve invited Huntley and every candidate or sitting Alderman/Alderwoman to participate in a ride along. He’s never shown up. Meanwhile, candidates like Keanuu Smith-Brown (Ward 3) and Jared Littman (Mayor) have done ride-alongs, and others have expressed interest in participating which shows effort to understand.
Instead of funding public safety, Huntley’s championing a height-limit exemption for one boutique hotel—complete with rooftop bar, for one property and property owner. That sounds very bought and paid for to us.
In a statement to Report Annapolis News, Alderman Huntley said that he has repeatedly and publicly opposed the provision to change height limits.
On September 16th, vote Ron Gunzburger for Ward One Alderman. Put safety ahead of political favors.
Thanks,
