Authorities Make Arrest in Connection with Death of Retired Anne Arundel County Firefighter

An arrest has been made in connection with the death of retired Annapolis Fire Department Captain, Robert Daywalt.

“On September 29, 2025, at approximately 9:30 a.m., deputies from the Caroline County Sheriff’s Office, Caroline County Department of Emergency Services and the Ridgely Volunteer Fire Company responded to 310 Maple Avenue, Ridgely, Maryland for a 65-year-old male in cardiac arrest,” officials said in a statement.

“Upon arrival, it was immediately apparent the victim was deceased and had sustained injuries consistent with an assault,” the release stated. “Based on these observations, the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division (CID) responded to the scene.”

“During the investigation, it was determined there was a physical altercation that had occurred between the victim and Tyler Davis, who remains innocent until proven guilty in a court of law, 22, of Ridgely, who also resided in the residence,” investigators said. “As a result of the investigation Tyler Davis was taken into custody without incident and charged with the following: Second Degree Murder, Manslaughter Adult Victim, Assault First Degree, Second Degree Assault, Reckless Endangerment, Vulnerable Adult Physical Injury, Vulnerable Adult Abuse House/Family Member, and Vulnerable Adult Abuse Custodian.”

“Tyler Davis was taken before the Caroline County District Court Commissioner for his initial appearance, at which time he was remanded to the Caroline County Detention Center without bond,” the Sheriff’s Office said.

“The Maryland State Police Crime Scene Unit and Caroline County State’s Attorney’s Office aided during this investigation,” officials added. “The victim was transported to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner in Baltimore, Maryland where an autopsy will be conducted.” According to the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner,

Court records identified the decedent as  Captain  Robert “Bobby” Daywalt. Charging documents state that Tyler Davis, the great nephew to Robert “Bobby” Daywalt, allegedly admitted to assaulting him during a confrontation overnight between September 28 and 29. Investigators said Davis allegedly told police he had been drinking and could not fully recall the incident. He allegedly claimed the altercation began after he made a comment that angered Daywalt, who reportedly struck him first. Davis allegedly admitted grabbing Daywalt’s arms and continuing the assault, saying he was pushed into a dresser and “blacked out” as the violence escalated.

The Annapolis Professional Firefighters have announced the passing of Retired Captain Robert "Bobby" Daywalt, a loss described as being "felt across the entire fire service community."
