Senator Shaneka Henson Joins Friends, Family, and Other Community Leaders to Honor Rev. Callie Matthews at 12th Annual Scholarship Walk in Annapolis

Senator Shaneka Henson joined friends and family of Rev. Callie Matthews, along with other community leaders and residents, for the 12th Annual Rev. Callie Cares Scholarship Walk—a cherished tradition honoring the enduring legacy of Reverend Matthews. Established by her family, the event celebrates a life devoted to faith, service, and education. According to an online obituary, Reverend Matthews passed away on October 2, 2013 at the age of 67. 

The event took place at the historic Weems Whalen Field on Spa Road. Participants walked to raise awareness for breast cancer and to support scholarships for local students. According to the Rev. Callie Cares Scholarship Foundation, the initiative has helped more than 20 young people pursue higher education, a tangible testament to the Matthews family’s dedication to empowering the next generation.


Over the past 12 years, the annual walk has grown into a meaningful celebration of community solidarity, education, and health awareness, reflecting Rev. Matthews’ enduring influence on Annapolis and the surrounding area. 

Rev. Matthews committed her life to ministry across several United Methodist congregations, including Asbury United Methodist Church in Jessup from 2000 to 2005, and both Mount Zion and Fowler United Methodist Churches in Annapolis from 2005 to 2009. She was consistently recognized for her compassionate leadership, steadfast commitment to education, and unwavering advocacy for families and young people.

Senator Henson shared her reflections on social media, stating:

"This morning I joined the community for the 12th Annual Rev. Callie Cares Scholarship Walk—a beautiful tradition started by the family of Rev. Callie Matthews to honor her legacy of faith, service, and education. Each year, they walk to raise breast cancer awareness and funds for scholarships—and to date, they’ve helped more than 20 young people achieve their college dreams.
