Dozens of elected officials and community leaders participated in serving meals during the 34th Annual We Care and Friends Thanksgiving Dinner in Annapolis, supporting individuals and families across Annapolis and Anne Arundel County.
In a statement, County Executive Pittman described We Care and Friends as “an incredible organization that is helping support our neighbors this holiday season.” Hey expressed gratitude to all groups and residents involved, noting, “Your generosity and support does not go unnoticed.”
County Executive Pittman was joined by other elected officials, including Ward 6 Alderwoman-Elect Diesha Contee, and candidates for office in supporting the event.
The annual dinner brings the community together to provide meals and aid to those in need, showcasing the spirit of giving.
Dr. James Kitchin, Special Assistant to County Executive Pittman and Candidate for County Executive, said the following:
"I joined We Care and Friends for their 34th annual Thanksgiving Dinner at the Stanton Center. It was a powerful reminder of what community looks like when we show up for one another. This tradition, started by the late Mr. Larry Griffin, has fed and uplifted families for decades. His mission to build stronger communities continues today, carried forward by his wife, Mrs. Rachel Griffin, and dozens of dedicated volunteers with so much heart. Thank you to We Care and Friends, the Annapolis Police Department, and all the local businesses that donated to make this day possible. Community is strongest when we build it together."

According to an online profile, Larry grew up in Eastport and has lived in the City of Annapolis for over 50 years. "He was well known for his community support and accomplishments," the profile said. "Larry had been honored with multiple awards for his dedication and commitment to building the community through individuals, families, and groups."
Larry founded We Care and Friends after overcoming personal struggles of his own. "By 1987, Larry was so thankful for the change in his life," a We Care and Friends website states. "In 1990, Larry Griffin recognized how deeply Annapolis and Anne Arundel County citizens and families were affected by drugs, poverty, and crime in the area. He saw that change could be brought about by building a strong, continuous family structure. To achieve this, he created positive activities and increased awareness of local resources in order to uplift the community."
Described as a grass roots 501(c)3 organization, We Care and Friends is known to many as the place to go for those who have no one to turn to for help. Larry established the organization with a much needed mission; creating strong families, and communities impacted by drugs, poverty, and crime.
