Charting Careers to Launch Two Community Computer Labs Aimed at Closing Annapolis’ Digital Divide
Charting Careers recently announced a significant initiative aimed at bridging Annapolis' digital divide: the imminent launch of two new community-based computer labs. This project was established with the support of the Maryland Department of Housing and Community Development’s Office of State Broadband, in collaboration with The Haven at College Creek Church, Eastport United Methodist Church, and the City of Annapolis’ Naptown CEO Academy Maker’s Space.
These new labs directly address the digital inequities highlighted in the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County’s Poverty Amidst Plenty VIII report. The report revealed that over 16% of residents experiencing poverty lack home internet access, and many families either do not own a computer or depend solely on smartphones. These obstacles to education, employment, and essential services are particularly prevalent in the neighborhoods Charting Careers serves. To help mitigate these critical disparities, the labs will provide:
- Free access to computers and high-speed internet
- Digital literacy workshops focused on developing practical skills
- Dedicated support for youth, job-seekers, adult learners, and families
- A welcoming, community-centered environment within trusted local spaces
Operating hours for the labs are anticipated to be announced in the coming weeks. Charting Careers expressed deep gratitude for the partners who assisted in bringing this project to fruition and underscored its commitment to ongoing collaboration throughout the city. The organization hopes these labs will function as accessible, empowering centers for learning, connection, and opportunity. As the organization shared, “Our goal is to ensure every resident — regardless of income or neighborhood — has the tools they need to thrive in an increasingly digital world. Together, we can close the digital divide in Annapolis.”
