Steuart Pittman, Anne Arundel County Executive, Chosen as Maryland Democratic Party Chair

Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman was unanimously elected as the Chair of the Maryland Democratic Party by the Maryland State Central Committee today, June 21, 2025. He faced no challengers for the position, and this election follows Ken Ulman's stepping down on June 13th.

Governor Wes Moore commented on the election, stating, "Steuart Pittman’s success, experience, and leadership in Anne Arundel County is a significant asset for Democrats across the state. He has a track record of winning tough races and knows how to get things done."

Since his election as Anne Arundel County Executive in 2018, Pittman has focused on making Anne Arundel County "The Best Place - For All." Under his leadership, the county achieved its first two triple AAA bond ratings in its history and has reduced crime through investments in technology and increased law enforcement employment.

In 2022, Pittman facilitated the acquisition of the Crownsville State Hospital property, which has been transformed into the Crownsville Hospital Memorial Park, a dedicated space for healing and community restoration. Before serving as County Executive, Pittman was a community organizer at the Association of Community Organizations for Reform Now. 1st Vice Chair Dr. Charlene Dukes also expressed her support, saying, "Steuart Pittman is the best choice to chair the Party. He has a proven ability to win in purple areas and he will use that know-how to support every Democrat across the state."

As Chair, Pittman's responsibilities will include helping to elect Maryland Democrats in all statewide elections. This includes winning municipal races, defending Democratic supermajorities in the state house, and retaining the Comptroller’s Office, the Attorney General’s Office, and the Governor’s mansion. He plans to campaign alongside Democratic candidates and highlight the impacts of Republican policy choices.

Mr. Pittman will officially assume the role of Chair once his personal campaign account is closed, in accordance with state law. This process is expected to be completed by the end of the month. Pittman shared his own goals, stating, “I hope to utilize my background and experience to elect as many Democrats as possible and continue to move Maryland forward.”

Annapolis Mayoral Candidate Jared Littmann released the following statement:

"Congratulations to my friend and colleague, County Executive Steuart Pittman, on being elected chair of the Maryland Democratic Party this morning. If I’m fortunate to be elected Mayor of Annapolis later this year, I’ll look forward to working closely with Steuart to move our city forward!"
