District 1 Councilmember Pete Smith Launches Bid for County Executive
Pete Smith, a prominent community leader in Anne Arundel County, currently serving on the County Council as the representative for District One, has initiated his campaign for County Executive.
For a decade, Pete has dedicated himself to public service as a County Councilman for the 1st District, representing the diverse neighborhoods in the northern part of the county.
While Anne Arundel County has experienced positive growth, its continued success is not guaranteed. Pete has heard from many friends, neighbors, and business owners about the challenges and uncertainties they face. In an era of unreliable federal support and significant state fiscal constraints, it is imperative that the Anne Arundel County government proactively supports its residents by ensuring excellent schools, a thriving business environment, and robust public safety.
Pete is proud of the bipartisan achievements during his tenure on the County Council. However, he recognizes the need for our County Government to be more responsive. Residents frequently experience delays in resolving issues such as trash-filled lots, obtaining building permits, or reserving recreation center rooms. As County Executive, Pete will foster a culture of excellence and customer service, ensuring that every county employee treats residents as valued customers deserving of their utmost effort. This ethos is inspired by his experiences as a Marine and in the cybersecurity industry. Pete is also committed to providing comprehensive support for our children, from a truly great public school system to essential facilities and mentorship opportunities.
Pete understands the profound impact of mentorship firsthand. Despite a challenging upbringing, Pete’s path was shaped by mentors who provided purpose and passion. He recalls a police officer who offered guidance instead of an arrest during a difficult time in 7th grade, leading him to discover swimming at a community center. This officer became a pivotal figure in his life. During high school, Pete found support in a chess club teacher who became a father figure, and another teacher who instilled in him the power of words through debate and speech. These public sector employees, through their dedication and community resources, profoundly impacted Pete's life. He believes these resources are vital for our community, as we never know the lives we might touch. This conviction fuels his strong commitment to public education; as a councilman, he championed high funding levels for schools and will continue to do so as County Executive.
After high school, Pete joined the Marine Corps, becoming an intelligence specialist and developing skills in technology, budget management, and leadership. He has served nearly 27 years, both active duty and as a reservist. Pete has worked at Fort Meade and recognizes its economic importance. As County Executive, he will streamline Anne Arundel’s economic development efforts to expedite deals.
Pete’s track record is strong, including:
* Achieving full funding for our schools, overcoming previous attempts to underfund them.
* Boosting our economy by supporting the development of conference space at Arundel Mills, retaining events and high school graduations within the county.
* Enhancing community safety by advocating for technology for our police department to prevent and solve crime.
* Leading efforts to provide tax breaks for veterans, helping them remain in their homes.
