County Executive Candidates Take Questions on Key Issues During Debate in Annapolis
The Caucus of African American Leaders, in partnership with the National Coalition of 100 Black Women Anne Arundel County Chapter, hosted a County Executive debate Tuesday, bringing participants together for a structured discussion on key issues.
The debate, attended by approximately 150 people, took place at the Wiley H. Bates Legacy Center in Annapolis. Participating candidates included James Kitchen, Pete Smith, Allison Pickard, and Kyle Nehmhard.
Daryl Jones, a former Anne Arundel County Council member, prominent attorney, and co-host of WOL Radio’s Igniting Change, moderated the discussion and managed the flow of questions throughout the evening. He retained discretion to allow follow-up exchanges when responses warranted additional clarification.
Panelists questioned candidates on a range of issues affecting county residents. During the debate, direct and issue-focused questions were aimed at prompting candidates to outline clear priorities if elected. Topics discussed included affordable housing, education, as well as diversity and equity.
An audience Q&A segment allowed attendees to ask questions, with guidelines requiring them to remain brief and focused rather than narrative. Kevin Smith, Co-Founder and Executive Director of 4 the Culture Annapolis, was among those in attendance. In a social media statement, Mr. Smith praised the moderator and panelists for taking a direct approach, noting the discussion remained centered on core issues impacting county residents.
According to Carl Snowden, Convener for the Caucus of African American Leaders, the debate was part of a broader effort to ensure voters had the opportunity to hear directly from candidates on the issues shaping the county’s future. The debate can be viewed by clicking here.
