Annapolis Residents, Community Leaders Gather for the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and African Diaspora Festival
The spirit of unity was on full display in Annapolis today as hundreds gathered for the 2026 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and African Diaspora Festival, an annual tradition honoring the life and legacy of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.
Organized by the Annapolis Drum and Bugle Corps in partnership with the City of Annapolis, the event brought together community members, local organizations, and performers for a vibrant celebration of Dr. King’s enduring message of equality, justice, and nonviolence.
The parade started from Amos Garrett Boulevard and proceeded through the city before concluding on Calvert Street. Along the route, spectators lined the streets, cheering as marching bands, candidates seeking public office and elected officials made their way through downtown Annapolis.
Attendees reflected the diversity and unity of the community, with many groups highlighting themes of service, education, and social justice, principles closely associated with Dr. King’s work during the Civil Rights Movement. Music, banners, and coordinated performances added to the festive yet reflective atmosphere.
The annual event serves not only as a celebration but also as a reminder of the ongoing work required to advance equity and opportunity for all. For many attendees, the event offered a moment to both honor history and inspire future
generations to carry forward Dr. King’s vision.
“What stands out to me is how this brings the whole community together, neighbors, families, local organizations, and elected officials all in one place," attendee Phyllis Carter-Jacskon stated during an interview with Report Annapolis News. "It’s a chance to reflect on how far we’ve come, but also to remind ourselves that building a more fair and inclusive Annapolis takes all of us, working together every day.”
In a statement, the Annapolis Office of Emergency Management said "The Annapolis Office of Emergency Management had a great time walking in today’s MLK Parade! "We are proud to stand with our community and recognize the lasting impact of Dr. King’s work."
"It was an honor to join the City of Annapolis Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Parade, a beautiful celebration of community, service, and Dr. King’s enduring legacy." Senator Shaneka Henson stated in a social media post. "I’m proud to stand with Annapolis as we continue that work together. Thank you to Mayor Jared Littmann and the City Council for bringing us together in such a powerful way. Events like this remind us that Dr. King’s dream is not just history, it is a call to action."
