Former Annapolis City Attorney Speaks with Report Annapolis News Following Departure

David Michael Lyles, former Annapolis City Attorney, spoke with Report Annapolis News just one day after Mayor Littmann announced his immediate departure from the position, ending six years of service to the City of Annapolis:

"I was told yesterday by the Mayor Littman that he desired to hire his own City Attorney. He thanked me for my service. I thanked him for his leadership. The City posted an announcement earlier today consistent with that."

Attorney Lyles denied media reports indicating he had been fired over using AI in recent court filings:

"I was dismissed prior to those allegations.

I was not privy to the filings or statements by the Plaintiffs lawyers and am unaware of the specific allegations. I am confident that the new leaders of the office will continue to excellently defend the City's legal position in all courts.

The City's briefs are public and I think they are very good and speak for themselves. Please read them. Arguments about why the case falls short are solid. Other things brought up by Plaintiffs' attorneys which divert attention from the legal basis for their lawsuit, I am no longer in a position to opine on. But I have a sterling reputation in the legal community that I value, and AI has never been something that I found useful and have resisted its use. Why other news organizations have confused the two issues is beyond me."
