Governor Moore Praises Election of Joseline Peña-Melnyk as Next Speaker of the Maryland House

Governor Wes Moore on Tuesday released a statement commending the Maryland House of Delegates for electing Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk as the next Speaker of the House, praising her record of leadership and commitment to public service. District 21 Delegate Joseline Peña-Melnyk has represented Prince George's and Anne Arundel Counties as a Member of the Maryland House of Delegates since January 10, 2007.

In his statement, Moore described Peña-Melnyk as a leader who embodies the core values of public service, calling her “a fighter” who not only believes in the dignity of all Marylanders but actively works to turn that belief into action.

“The members of the Maryland House of Delegates have elevated a leader who defines public service in every beautiful sense of that phrase,” Moore said.

The governor highlighted his longstanding working relationship with Peña-Melnyk, noting their collaboration on major issues affecting Maryland residents, including reproductive freedom and efforts to prevent rising health care costs.

“I’ve had the privilege of calling Chair Peña-Melnyk an ally and a friend for years,” Moore said, adding that he looks forward to continuing their partnership as she takes on her new role as Speaker.

Moore also acknowledged the legacy of outgoing Speaker Adrienne Jones, stating that Peña-Melnyk will be stepping into a role shaped by strong leadership.

“Former Speaker Adrienne Jones leaves big shoes to fill,” Moore said. “But I have complete confidence that Joseline Peña-Melnyk will carry forward—and build on—Speaker Jones’ profound legacy of leadership, while also building a legacy of her own.”

Peña-Melnyk’s election marks a new chapter in leadership for the Maryland House of Delegates, with the governor expressing confidence in her ability to guide the chamber and continue advancing priorities affecting Marylanders statewide.
