Gospel Icon and Longtime Maryland Resident Richard Smallwood Remembered by Local Faith and Political Leaders

Faith and political leaders across Annapolis, Anne Arundel County, and the broader Maryland region are reflecting on the life and legacy of Richard Smallwood, the internationally acclaimed gospel composer, pianist, and arranger, following the announcement of his passing on his official Facebook page. Smallwood reportedly died on December 30, 2025, in Montgomery County, at the age of 77.

Smallwood was born in Atlanta, Georgia, and later made Maryland his home while his work reached audiences around the world. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in contemporary gospel music, his compositions — including “Total Praise” and “I Love the Lord” — remain staples in faith communities across denominations.

After graduating from Howard University in 1971, Richard Smallwood went on to form The Richard Smallwood Singers. Smallwood, who earned a second degree from Howard University in 2004, is also credited with forming Vision, an acclaimed choir.

“A proud alumnus of Howard University, Richard Smallwood's rich harmonies, spiritual depth, and timeless compositions have inspired generations,” the university’s Department of Music said in a social media statement. The department added that it “continues to honor and build on that legacy, nurturing students in performance, composition, and jazz studies, and celebrating the enduring impact of Smallwood’s artistry.”

Smallwood’s influence was also recognized through major regional tributes in recent years, including GospelFest: Richard Smallwood in Meyerhoff Symphony Hall and A Gospel Symphony Celebration: Tribute to Richard Smallwood at The Kennedy Center.

Reflecting on Smallwood’s life and legacy, Annapolis Ward 6 Alderwoman Diesha Contee said in a statement to Report Annapolis News, “I have been in the church since I was a little kid, and ‘Total Praise’ was one of my favorite songs.”

Alderwoman Contee added, “Richard Smallwood didn’t just write great gospel songs — he changed expectations of what gospel music could be and how it was viewed. He has been and will continue to be a huge pillar and someone to admire for years to come."

Anne Arundel County Councilman Pete Smith  recalled Smallwood’s influence within faith communities and beyond. “As someone who grew up singing in a gospel choir, I was very familiar with the work and inspiration of Mr. Smallwood. Heaven has gained an angel, but his music will live on for generations to come,” Smith said.

Delegate LaToya Nkongolo also noted Smallwood’s enduring influence: “Having grown up in the church and listening to gospel music, Richard Smallwood was a powerful figure and was instrumental in shaping contemporary gospel music. His influence will live on for generations, and his music will continue to inspire faith and hope in communities worldwide.”

Highlighting Smallwood’s impact, Senator Shaneka Henson emphasized both his Maryland roots and musical legacy. “We are proud that Richard Smallwood was a son of Maryland with deep roots in the DMV. His legacy will continue to be celebrated through the faith, culture, and music he shared with the world,” Senator Henson told Report Annapolis News.

Senator Henson shared a personal reflection, saying, “Richard Smallwood’s impact is truly immeasurable. Growing up, his voice and melodies were often heard in my home. While his presence will be deeply missed, his legacy will continue to be felt through the remarkable body of work he left for us all. Heaven has gained an angel.”

Senator Henson said Richard Smallwood’s music "reminds us that resilience is not the absence of struggle, but the decision to trust God through it." "His music gave voice to a faith that endured hardship with honesty and strength," said Senator Henson.

Bishop Craig Coates of Fresh Start Church in Glen Burnie said Smallwood’s influence shaped his musical and spiritual journey. “His music was insightful, deeply spiritual, and spoke directly to the heart of worship,” Bishop Coates said. “I owe much of my ability to define myself as a musician and an artist to Richard Smallwood.”

Bishop Coates added, “Throughout Richard Smallwood's life and career, he never deviated from his God-given purpose — to glorify God through music. He brought extraordinary diversity to gospel music while maintaining spiritual integrity and excellence.”
