Dog Rescued by Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Firefighters After Falling Down Icy Embankment Near Luce Creek in Parole

This morning, Anne Arundel County Fire Department received a 911 call reporting that a chocolate lab was stuck on the frozen Luce Creek in Annapolis' Parole community. The dog, a chocolate Labrador named Gizmo, had reportedly fallen approximately 200 feet down after being let outside to use the bathroom.

Crews from the Annapolis Fire Department, Edgewater Volunteer Fire Department and Anne Arundel County Fire Department located the dog on the ice and utilized specialized equipment to safely retrieve him. Gizmo is reported to be recovering well after being transported to the Anne Arundel Veterinary Emergency Clinic, following approximately one hour of exposure to icy conditions and low temperatures.

In light of this incident, officials are reminding the public that ice on local waterways remains dangerously thin. Residents are urged to keep pets leashed near icy water and to contact 911 immediately rather than attempting a self-rescue should a person or pet fall through the ice.
