Mayor Littmann Releases Statement Addressing Federal Immigration Enforcement Activity in Annapolis
Annapolis Mayor Jared Littmann recently addressed immigration enforcement activity conducted within city limits and in areas just beyond the city’s borders, emphasizing that the actions were carried out by federal authorities without coordination or advance notice to the City of Annapolis.
According to the Mayor, city officials learned that federal immigration enforcement operations were underway earlier this week and believe the actions resulted in the detention of four individuals from Annapolis. Littmann stated that immigration enforcement is the responsibility of federal agencies and that the City of Annapolis does not participate in or assist with such operations.
“These activities are not coordinated with the City of Annapolis and we receive no advance notice of ICE operations,” Littmann said. He added that city departments, including public safety officials, do not take part in federal immigration enforcement efforts.
The mayor noted that while the city respects the role of law enforcement, the Annapolis Police Department’s responsibility is limited to ensuring laws are followed locally and preventing situations from escalating into violence. Residents with concerns about enforcement activity occurring within the city are encouraged to contact the Annapolis Police Department.
In response to community concerns following the reported detentions, Littmann said the city is working with Anne Arundel County, volunteer organizations, and local non-profits to support impacted individuals and families. These efforts include connecting residents with accurate information, referrals to legal aid, and access to ongoing community resources.
The City of Annapolis is encouraging individuals in need of assistance are to contact the Anne Arundel County Family Protection Initiative Hotline at 410-222-0319.
Littmann also reaffirmed Annapolis’ identity as a welcoming community, citing the city’s long history and diverse population. He emphasized the importance of dignity, safety, and constitutional principles in government actions, particularly due process. “Over its more than 300-year history, this community has been continually strengthened by the contributions of people from diverse backgrounds,” Littmann said. He added that as a city closely tied to the nation’s founding and its traditions of liberty, Annapolis believes government actions should reflect the constitutional promise of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness for all.
