Santa Wayne, Beloved Marley Station Mall Christmas Icon Who Brought Holiday Magic to Generations, Has Passed Away

Wayne “Santa Wayne” McCrea, the beloved Marley Station Mall Santa who brought joy and Christmas magic to generations of families across Anne Arundel County, has passed away.

“Very sad to have to pass on the news that Santa Wayne passed away today,” Rob Frost wrote this afternoon in a statement inside the Facebook group, "Marley Station Memories."

For more than 35 years, Santa Wayne was a cherished and familiar face during the holiday season at Marley Station Mall. First stepping into the red suit in 1989, he became a constant presence for families who returned year after year to continue Christmas traditions with the man many children simply knew as Santa.

Over the decades, Santa Wayne remained a source of warmth, joy and holiday spirit. Through shifting shopping trends, store closures and quieter hallways, families still lined up each Christmas season to see him, take photos and experience the magic he created for children and parents alike.

In a tribute shared in the Marley Station Memories group, Santa Wayne’s family encouraged the community to continue believing in the spirit of Christmas and to look to the stars as a reminder that his kindness and magic remain present.

The tribute, titled “The Forever Magic of Santa Wayne,” reflected on faith, love and reunion, describing Santa Wayne as “walking back into the light” and reuniting with his wife after years apart.
“To thousands of children, he made dreams come true,” the family wrote.

“We honor the beautiful path that you traced, and the love and kindness that time can’t erase,” the tribute states.

The tribute closed with a promise to carry forward the spirit of Christmas and the memories Santa Wayne created throughout his lifetime.
The tribute was signed, “With Love & Belief, Beth, Josh, Ethan.”

According to a December 2025 Report Annapolis News article, Santa Wayne’s impact extended far beyond Marley Station Mall. Before becoming the mall’s longtime Santa, he also spent years serving as the United States Naval Academy’s Santa while working as a photographer, helping create treasured memories for midshipmen and families alike.

Family members described him as more than someone portraying Santa Claus during the holidays. Instead, they said he became “the genuine beat of our heart,” creating moments of joy, comfort and wonder that left lasting impressions on countless children and parents alike. “With a snow-drifted beard and a laugh full of cheer,” the tribute reads, “he brought pure enchantment to everyone near.”

Just months before his death, the community rallied around Santa Wayne after he was diagnosed with heart failure and forced to step away from the role he loved so deeply. At the time, surgery had been scheduled for January, prompting an outpouring of support from people throughout the community whose lives he had touched over the decades.

“Santa Wayne has been my Santa all my life. I never knew of other Santas,” Gracie Painter previously told Report Annapolis News. “When I became a mother in 2022, he became my daughter’s Santa as well.”

Others shared stories of the joy and magic he created for children and families throughout the years.

Pamela Long recalled how Santa Wayne once surprised her son with a cherished toy truck he believed had been lost forever. “His face lit up with excitement,” Ms. Long said at the time. “It was such an unforgettable experience that will be etched in our son’s memory forever.”

According to Christine Leeland, a 2022 visit with Santa Wayne at Marley Station Mall unexpectedly renewed the magic of Christmas for her family after he surprised her child with a vintage Pokémon card pulled from his coat pocket.

Following news of his illness last year, supporters organized cards, donations and messages of encouragement to remind Santa Wayne how deeply loved he was by the community he had spent decades uplifting. “He has touched so many hearts, and we just want to show him how much he is loved by all,” his niece Cara McAdams previously stated.
