Annapolis Mayor Jared Littmann Welcomes Maynard Family Back to Historic Maynard-Burgess House for May Day Tradition

Annapolis Mayor Jared Littmann and city employees recently welcomed members of the Maynard family back to the historic Maynard-Burgess House for a special May Day basket hanging ceremony, according to a statement released by the City of Annapolis.

Among those visiting the property were Hilton Maynard and two of his children, the statement said. The Maynard-Burgess House holds deep historical significance in Annapolis, having served as home to two African-American families during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The property remains an important part of the city’s African-American heritage and preservation efforts.

City officials noted that renovation work on the historic structure continues to move forward. Restoration of the main floor was completed in 2025 and the space is currently being utilized as office space.

According to the city, the first phase of the project focused primarily on structural repairs designed to stabilize the building and prepare it for future restoration work planned for the second and third floors.

The gathering marked both a celebration of Annapolis tradition and a recognition of the families whose history remains connected to the landmark property. For more information about the The Maynard-Burgess House, click here
