Maryland Freedom Caucus Addresses Energy Bill, Pledges Push for Amendments
The Maryland Freedom Caucus says it will continue pressing for major changes to state energy policy following the advancement of an energy bill in the Maryland General Assembly.
In a press release issued Friday, the caucus said its members have spent the past year highlighting what they describe as legislative failures that have contributed to Maryland’s fiscal and energy challenges, which they argue have increased costs for families and businesses.
The statement points to House Bill 1532, a more than 100-page omnibus measure titled the “Utility RELIEF Act,” as the majority party’s response to those concerns. The caucus said the legislation was advanced out of committee late Thursday night on what it described as a strict party-line vote.
The group contends the bill’s introduction reflects mounting pressure from the caucus over the past year to address energy costs and reliability issues.
Members of the Maryland Freedom Caucus say they are reviewing the legislation over the weekend but believe it does not yet provide what they describe as the consumer-focused reforms needed to lower electricity costs, strengthen reliability, and restore trust in state government.
The caucus indicated it intends to offer amendments aimed at lowering energy costs for households and businesses, increasing transparency and accountability in utility practices, protecting ratepayers from what it describes as unjustified rate hikes, and ensuring reliable and affordable service for residents.
“This bill is not a victory for Marylanders; it is proof that our year-long pressure finally dragged this crisis into the spotlight,” said Matt Morgan, chair of the Maryland Freedom Caucus, in the statement. “Maryland families and job creators deserve concrete, measurable relief and we will continue pressing until they get it.”
The press release also urges Maryland residents to contact legislative leaders and participate in an email campaign encouraging action on taxes and fees tied to energy bills.
