Alderwoman Diesha Contee Reflects on “Full Circle” Moment at Newtowne 20 Pantry Ribbon Cutting
A ribbon cutting ceremony at the Newtowne 20 community pantry turned into a deeply personal milestone for Ward 6 Alderwoman Diesha Contee, who shared heartfelt reflections following the event.
In a statement posted to social media, Alderwoman Contee described the occasion as more than ceremonial, emphasizing its significance to her own life story and connection to the neighborhood.
“Today meant something personal to me as Diesha,” she shared. “This is a neighborhood that helped shape my childhood, where I learned community, resilience, and what it means to look out for one another.
Serving as acting mayor for the weekend, Alderwoman Contee participated in presenting awards to several longtime community members during the event. She described the experience as a “full circle” moment, standing in a community that once poured into her, now celebrating reinvestment and progress as a city leader.
The Newtowne 20 community pantry, she noted, represents the impact of intentional leadership and advocacy, highlighting what can be achieved through sustained investment in historically underserved neighborhoods.
“Newtowne 20 represents what intentional leadership and advocacy can deliver , real investment in our communities, real opportunities for residents, and a commitment to not leaving neighborhoods behind,” Alderwoman Contee stated.
She also underscored the importance of ensuring that development efforts remain centered on the people who have long called such communities home, urging continued focus on inclusive and equitable growth.
As part of the ceremony, several community figures were honored for their lasting contributions. Alderwoman Contee expressed personal appreciation for each of them, noting the relationships she has built over the years.
“This is what progress looks like when we do it together,” she said.
The event also featured a mural that Contee described as something that needed to be experienced in person to fully understand, symbolizing both the history and ongoing evolution of the Newtowne 20 community.
