State’s Attorney Anne Leitess Issues Statement on Public Safety, Accountability, and the Rule of Law in Immigration Enforcement

Leitess cited reports of excessive force and officer-involved shootings during federal operations, including fatal shootings of two U.S. citizens in Minneapolis, saying such incidents have created fear and raised concerns about First Amendment rights and transparency.
Madam State's Attorney described immigration enforcement by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) as increasingly “indiscriminate and chaotic,” alleging detentions without warrants and profiling based on appearance.
Leitess said fear of detention or deportation is discouraging immigrant victims and witnesses — including those with lawful status — from appearing in court, undermining public safety.
Her office, she said, will independently evaluate incidents under Maryland law, uphold due process, follow the evidence, and remain transparent within legal limits.
