Anne Arundel County Public Schools Board Reappoints Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell

The Board of Education for Anne Arundel County Public Schools unanimously voted Tuesday to reappoint Superintendent Dr. Mark Bedell to a second four-year term, according to a statement from the district.

Dr. Bedell was first appointed in June 2022 and began serving two months later. The reappointment is contingent on successful contract negotiations, the statement said.

During his first term, Dr. Bedell oversaw the district’s emergence from the COVID-19 pandemic, two phases of comprehensive redistricting, and increases in test scores, according to the statement.

The district also expanded access to advanced coursework, launched new elementary math and language arts curricula, reduced staff and bus driver vacancies, improved school climate survey results, and significantly lowered chronic absenteeism.

Board President Gloria Dent said in the statement that the district is “in a better place than we were four years ago” and expressed optimism for continued progress.

Dr. Bedell said the district has taken “significant steps” toward becoming a premier school system and that he looks forward to continuing the work.
