Annapolis Police Department Announces LGBTQ+ Community Liaison

The Annapolis Police Department has announced the appointment of Officer Timika Williams as the department's LGBTQ+ liaison, a role intended to strengthen relationships between law enforcement and the LGBTQ+ community while encouraging the reporting and investigation of potential hate crimes.

According to the department, the liaison position is designed to improve communication and collaboration between the police department and members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and allied communities.

Officer Williams will work across several divisions within the department, including Investigations and Recruiting, to educate, assist, and engage officers, residents, businesses, and community organizations on issues affecting LGBTQ+ individuals.

The department said the position will also focus on identifying public safety concerns within the LGBTQ+ community and building trust that encourages victims and witnesses to report hate crimes and other acts of violence. Officials hope those efforts will lead to stronger partnerships and improved investigative outcomes.

Acting Police Chief Amy Miguez praised Officer Williams' appointment, describing it as a natural extension of her longstanding commitment to community engagement.

"Community policing is a vital part of the work our officers do every day," Acting Chief Miguez said. "Officer Williams is committed to fostering a more welcoming and inclusive environment for everyone. She resolves conflicts professionally, communicates empathetically, and builds strong strategic partnerships throughout the community. 

While she is just beginning her role as the department's liaison, this appointment is simply the latest milestone in her years of dedicated service. With Officer Williams' experience and commitment to community engagement, we are better positioned to serve our residents and ensure that everyone is treated with respect, dignity, and fairness."

Officer Williams brings more than 20 years of experience in community engagement, supporting underrepresented groups and voices, and helping bridge organizational divides. As part of her new responsibilities, she will meet with local LGBTQ+ organizations and community groups to strengthen dialogue, build trust, and enhance collaboration between the department and the community.
