Sheriff Everett Sesker Raises Concerns Over Opponent's Use of "Re-Elect" in Campaign Materials
Anne Arundel County Sheriff Everett Sesker has publicly raised concerns about what he describes as a lack of integrity in the 2026 campaign for Sheriff, alleging that his opponent's use of the phrase "Re-Elect" in campaign materials is misleading to voters.
In a statement titled "Leading with Integrity," Sesker emphasized the importance of honesty, transparency, and earning public trust, drawing parallels between public safety professions and elected office.
"As someone who has served in public safety, I understand that titles such as Police Officer, Deputy, or Firefighter are earned through rigorous training and dedication," Sesker wrote. "These titles, and the badges that represent them, carry a weight that is priceless to those who serve."
Sesker said the same principle applies to elected office, arguing that the designation "Re-Elect" is recognition earned by an incumbent officeholder.
According to the Sheriff, his opponent Jim Fredericks, who previously served as Anne Arundel County Sheriff from 2018-2022, is using the phrase "Re-Elect" in campaign materials despite not being the incumbent.
Sesker further asserted that, in many jurisdictions, the use of such language by a non-incumbent is considered misleading and, in some cases, prohibited by law unless accompanied by a disclaimer clarifying that the candidate does not currently hold the office. He did not cite a specific law or jurisdiction in his statement. "The role of the Sheriff and the essence of law enforcement is to protect and serve the public, which begins with honesty and transparency," Sesker wrote. "Misleading the voters of Anne Arundel County undermines the very profession we seek to lead."
The Sheriff concluded his statement by urging voters to consider the issue as they cast their ballots, stating that ensuring "a fair and honest election" begins with integrity and transparency throughout the campaign process.
