(photo source: campaign) Following the release of unofficial results of the Anne Arundel County Democratic primary for County Executive, candidate Pete Smith has released an apparent concession statement, congratulating Allison Pickard on her victory while thanking supporters who backed his campaign over the past year.
In the statement, Smith said that while the outcome was not what he had hoped for, he accepted the decision of the voters.
"After more than a year of campaigning and laying out our vision for Anne Arundel County, voters have made their choice," Smith wrote. "This wasn't the outcome I was hoping for, but I accept it."
Smith congratulated Pickard on what he described as a vigorous and positive campaign, expressing confidence that she would work in the county's best interests. He also encouraged her to remember residents who "don't always have a seat at the table" as she prepares for the next phase of the campaign and, potentially, public office.
Despite the election results, Smith said his commitment to Anne Arundel County remains unchanged. "Our county is worth fighting for. That hasn't changed with this election, and will never change," he said.
Reflecting on his campaign, Smith pointed to his background as a Marine and public servant, saying he has always believed that a person's beginnings do not determine their future. He added that he intends to continue serving and giving back to the community that has shaped his life.
Smith also expressed appreciation to his campaign team, volunteers, and supporters for their dedication throughout the race.
"There is no dishonor in falling short," he wrote. "We did our best, and the principles we believe in remain important."
His statement concludes the Democratic primary campaign on a conciliatory note, emphasizing gratitude, public service, and a continued commitment to Anne Arundel County regardless of the election outcome.
