Anne Arundel Orphans’ Court Judge Marc Knapp Removed from Office by Maryland Supreme Court

The Supreme Court of Maryland has ordered the immediate removal of Anne Arundel County Orphans’ Court Judge Marc Knapp from office following findings of judicial misconduct.

In order filed June 4, 2026, the Court stated that it reviewed findings, conclusions of law, and recommendations submitted by the Maryland Commission on Judicial Disabilities, along with arguments presented during a hearing held the same day.

According to the order, which can be read by clicking here, the Commission determined that Knapp violated multiple provisions of the Maryland Code of Judicial Conduct, including rules related to compliance with the law, promoting public confidence in the judiciary, bias and harassment, competence and diligence, courtroom decorum, and cooperation with disciplinary authorities.

The Supreme Court concluded that Knapp committed one or more of the violations identified by the Commission and determined that removal was the appropriate sanction. The Court cited the “egregious nature of the misconduct” in reaching its decision.

Under the Maryland Constitution, the Supreme Court has the authority to remove a judge from office upon a finding of misconduct, persistent failure to perform official duties, or conduct prejudicial to the proper administration of justice.

The Court’s order states that Knapp’s removal became effective immediately on June 4, 2026.
