County Executive Steuart Pittman Signs Executive Order Restricting ICE Use of County Property

Last week, Anne Arundel County Executive Steuart Pittman signed an Executive Order 70, prohibiting U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) from using most county-owned facilities, parking lots, garages, parks, community centers, and vacant lots for immigration enforcement operations.

According to the order dated June 2, 2026, the restriction applies to activities such as surveillance, staging, mobilizing personnel, detention operations, vehicle storage, and the deployment of equipment. Exceptions may apply in publicly accessible areas, when required by law, or when ICE presents a valid judicial warrant specifically authorizing the use of county property.

The executive order, which can be read by clicking here, states that Anne Arundel County recognizes the federal government's authority to enforce immigration laws while seeking to ensure county resources are used in accordance with local policy priorities and public safety goals.

The order also directs the Anne Arundel County Police Department to independently investigate allegations of violence, property damage, or criminal conduct involving federal immigration operations. In addition, county first responders are directed to use established de-escalation practices and provide emergency medical assistance when necessary.

Pittman said the action is intended to promote community trust, protect public safety, and ensure county services remain accessible to all residents.

In a social media statement, County Councilman Nathan Volke said, Steuart Pittman, outgoing Anne Arundel County Executive and new MD Democratic Party Chair — is refusing to cooperate with ICE and actively blocking federal immigration enforcement in our county," Councilman Volke said. Your tax dollars are funding legal services for people here illegally. This isn’t a policy difference. This is a sitting official violating his oath of office to score political points on his way out the door. Anne Arundel County deserves better."
