Governor Wes Moore to Keynote Delta Sigma Theta Luncheon as Moore-Miller Campaign Reports $8 Million Cash on Hand

Maryland Governor Wes Moore is scheduled to deliver the keynote address Saturday at Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated’s Social Action Luncheon in Baltimore, as his reelection campaign separately reports entering the closing stretch of the election with $8 million cash on hand.

According to a media alert issued Friday, August 28, Governor Moore will address the Social Action Luncheon on Saturday, August 29, during the 55th Eastern Regional Conference of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. The conference is being held in Baltimore from August 27 through August 30.

The luncheon will bring together members of Delta Sigma Theta, elected officials, community leaders and advocates for a program centered on civic engagement, advocacy, political awareness and involvement. Organizers describe the event as reflecting the sorority’s longstanding commitment to collective action and civic participation.

The appearance comes as Governor Moore and Lieutenant Governor Aruna Miller’s reelection campaign announced a new round of fundraising Friday.

In a separate press release provided to Report Annapolis News, Moore-Miller for Maryland said the campaign raised more than $2 million during its latest fundraising period and now has approximately $8 million cash on hand as the election approaches.

The campaign also reported nearly 17,000 unique Maryland donors during the current election cycle. According to Moore-Miller for Maryland, 95 percent of contributors during its latest fundraising period were grassroots donors, with nearly half contributing to the campaign for the first time.

“Governor Moore and Lieutenant Governor Miller’s grassroots army has put them in a position to win big in November and ensure Maryland is competing up and down the ballot in every corner of the state,” Senior Communications Adviser Carter Elliott, IV said in the campaign’s announcement.

Mr. Elliott credited nearly 17,000 Maryland donors with supporting the campaign and said the Moore-Miller administration is seeking another term to continue its work involving the state economy, violent crime and education.

The fundraising figures and characterizations were announced by the Moore-Miller campaign and have not been independently verified by Report Annapolis News.

The campaign also pointed to endorsements from a number of labor, professional and political organizations, including the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers, 1199SEIU, American Federation of Government Employees, Maryland League of Conservation Voters, Maryland REALTORS®, Maryland International Association of Fire Fighters, Maryland State Education Association, Jewish Democratic Council of America, Win With Black Men and Service Employees International Union Local 500, among others.

Against that political backdrop, Saturday’s Delta Sigma Theta luncheon will focus specifically on social action and civic engagement.

The event will take place at the Baltimore Convention Center at One West Pratt Street. Organizers said Governor Moore’s keynote will bring his perspective on leadership, public service, opportunity and issues affecting Maryland and communities throughout the country.

Governor Moore, Maryland’s 63rd governor, became the first Black governor in the state’s history and the third African American elected governor of a U.S. state. The conference media alert describes Governor Moore as a Maryland native, Army veteran, Rhodes Scholar, author and former nonprofit executive.

Political and civic involvement has been part of Delta Sigma Theta’s history since its earliest days. Just weeks after the sorority was founded in 1913, its founders participated in the Women’s Suffrage March in Washington, D.C. Political Awareness and Involvement remains one of the organization’s Five-Point Programmatic Thrusts.
