Jennifer Road Detention Center Inmate Took Jail Employee Hostage During Escape Attempt

An inmate awaiting trial at the Jennifer Road Detention Center allegedly took a jail employee hostage yesterday while trying to escape the facility.

In a statement, officials said that at approximately 10:15 a.m., the county police department responded for a report of an assault of an employee at the Jennifer Road Detention Center, 131 Jennifer Road in Annapolis. "During the investigation, officers learned that the suspect, an inmate, was able to gain entry into an unoccupied office within the kitchen area of the facility. Inside that office, the suspect was able to manipulate a locked cabinet and obtain a kitchen knife," the statement said. "After obtaining the knife, the suspect encountered two female contractual kitchen employees and grabbed one of them. As the second employee fled to get assistance the suspect held onto the victim and attempted to move toward the kitchen exit. "

According to the statement, a detention officer came through the door and confronted the suspect as he neared the exit.  "Within less than one minute of the victim being grabbed by the suspect, the detention officer was able to engage the suspect, disarm him, and take him into custody."

There were no reported physical injuries as a result of the incident. The suspect was charged accordingly and identified as:
